Mountaintop Garden

Chattanooga, Tennessee

WMWA was approached to create an intimate, manageable garden with spaces for play, dining, and watching the sunset around a remodeled house. We were also tasked with devising a new drive and parking configuration to solve issues with grading and limited space. Our design focused on a walled outdoor court that included edibles, cut flowers, a play lawn, an outdoor fireplace, kitchen, and dining. The design features Tennessee sandstone for the fireplace, benches, walls, steps, and paving. By incorporating different finishes, patterns, and styles, we demonstrated the versatility of a local, affordable stone. A native plant palette echoes the ecological characteristics of the surrounding mountain landscape and provides a sustainable solution by utilizing materials that tolerate the harsh conditions of the mountain. Custom gates, fences, and rails compliment the garden and engineered soil and underdrains facilitate heavy use of the lawn. Surrounding the walled court, the landscape is designed to blend into the surrounding woodland. Punctuating the relationship between the interior space and surrounding landscape, the front grand stair, patio, and lawn open toward the views of western valleys and mountains.
