The Ramble

Chattanooga, Tennessee

Nestled within the heart of downtown Chattanooga from the Hunter Museum to the Chattanooga Green, The Ramble is a 22-acre district master plan that weaves the ecological and cultural legacies of the city into the urban fabric of today. Initially engaged by Chattanooga’s River City Company, WMWA and our multi-discipline team of design professionals collaborated with stakeholders from the city’s riverfront district to establish a framework for an innovative and engaging urban pedestrian corridor. The focus of this process leveraged increasing public interest to advocate for a plan that proposed a network of thoughtful and attractive public spaces that could house public artwork and could provide ample space for large public gatherings. Navigating the variety of urban conditions and the architectural inconsistencies within the limit of work, the plan defined a clear set of diverse design strategies the visually unified the site into a cohesive district of coherent and connected sequence of spaces. The plan specifically addresses accommodation of diverse users and experiences, pedestrian and vehicular circulation and safety, urban infill, parking, increased tree canopy, stormwater management and improved wayfinding. The Ramble serves as an innovative solution to the changing needs of Chattanooga’s urban core, and uniting the 22-acre site through an intentional visual framework provides a new precedent for how public spaces can blend into the existing fabric of the city.

Design team members include Urban Design Associates, Wolf|Josey, Nelson/Nygaard, and Gallagher and Associates.
